Columbus is racking up rainy days this month

Another day, more rain. Today marks the 11th day this month with measurable rain in Columbus. The last time we had that many wet days from May 1-17 was in 2016.

However, 2020 and 2019 both had 10 days with measurable rain in the first 17 days of May, so we’ve had a comparable situation a little more recently.

Columbus has officially had nearly 4 inches of rain so far this month, although that doesn’t even rank in the top 10. May 2022 had 4.18 inches by this point, and 1933 had a whopping 6.20 inches.

Here’s the estimated rainfall for the month so far in the area. Some localized estimates are near the 6-inch mark.

Despite the wet weather, the most recent USDA NASS report shows that Ohio corn and soybean planting progress is similar to, or ahead of, the 10-year average.

The weather pattern looks unsettled for the next little while, too. The Climate Prediction Center’s outlook for later this month has the Ohio Valley leaning toward odds of continued above-average rainfall.
